Tricare

I will face the same problem when we start full timing next year. I see a pain management doctor every three months. He gives me a script for 30 days with 2 refills.
I have TFL and use express Scripts for all my mess except for the pain med which I get at a local Mom and pop pharmacy.
I've told my PM doctor about my plans to travel and as of now he said I would have to be seen periodically in order to continue to get controlled med (I take buprenorphrine) from him. I'm hoping he will agree to stretch it out to every 6 months. If not, I will fly home to see him as required and hope that I can get my buph from Express RX.
Funny thing is that I have two daughters who are both MD's but they can't risk the rath of the DEA to prescribe for me.
The abuse of prescription medications by recreational drug users has made it extremely difficult for those of us with chronic pain to get the mess we need.
In anticipation of this, I weaned myself off of my pain med but was so miserable that I know that is not feasible. So like you I'll manage the best I can.
I have an emergency stash that will last me about a month if I run into problems but since I've been seeing this doctor for several years and always passed my annual drug testing I'm pretty sure my plan will work.

I don't see where you will have any problems using Express Scripts as your pharmacy, I have for 9 years as Standard and now For Life. They mail my prescriptions where ever I need them. One is a controlled substance and another is one that needs cold shipment. The cold shipment comes overnight from their specialty division and the controlled comes to the Post Office I tell them to send it to, signature required or to FedEx office signature required (I just pay more for delivery on this). I have always got my deliveries within a day of when they said. To me it seems it would be much harder having to use a Walmart or CVS and make sure the have what I need on hand. Good luck on working it out to suit you.

Update to my own question,
Called the Fort Polk Patient advisor yesterday and explained to her that My wife and I were hitting the road to full time RV and her pain meds were going to be an issue. Like it or not those with chronic conditions such as bone deterioration will have legitimate pain that will need to be treated for the rest of their life and the nature of these medications will cause addiction. The REAL problem as I see it is not just the street addict who becomes addicted due to irresponsible use to get high but the patient who becomes addicted after a recovery from an accident or illness and while the physical pain is no longer being generated from the affected area the pain medications have taken hold and create horrible addictions causing patients to chase pills and doctor shop.
Well long story short, My wife will be seen by The good folks at Fort Polk when we arrive in late June. They say they will take good care of her and see that she receives her medications as required. They will be able to give prescriptions beyond the strict 30 day (to the day) period we have become accustomed to in the civilian world. This will allow us to continue to see the country as long as I can keep the tank full. All looks good so far!! See you guys on the road!

I just talked to my wife. Surprise, she even answered!
She was able to get the doc to authorize a "vacation" prescription for some of her narcotics. She thought it was an extra 30 day supply.
She wasn't sure if Tricare picked up some of the costs or just our other insurance.
Might be worth a call!

Thanks for the positive words and advise. We are going forward with our plans and are sure we will find something that works. Very few know just how corrupt this country has become with prescription drug abuse. and how the DEA has put the pressure on doctors, so much pressure that many have stopped prescribing meds that help the few with honest problems. unfortunately, so many of our wounded warriors are being discharged into this nightmare. Even here at the VA scum bags wait outside the pharmacy trying to buy your medicine. (some do sell it) It is the same at my wife's pain clinic, addicts in the hall, parking lot all over. Express scripts will not mail amphetamines so we are stuck. Her doctor loves us, he supports military and discusses the problem candidly with us. We just thought it may be easier to see military docs and get the scrip's written along the way if we have complete records of responsible use.

We full time and have a doctor at our home of records. We use Express Scripts to handle all our medications except for controlled meds which we use CVS for. They mail them to wherever you are and will maintain a one year order from your doctor that they will fill automatically. Our doctor will only do 3 months at a time so we have to call when we need a refill. Wife has been going thru Chemo for the last 4 years and right now in Florida for the winter we have a Oncologist here and one in MI. She's on Medicare and I'm still on Tricare and if I need to see a doctor on the road most urgent care centers will take Tricare or a call to Tricare center for the region can give you a list of doctors in your area you can call to get an appointment.

I would not give up!
Have her go to your current doctor, explain what you want to do and see if he/she is receptive to your/her plans.
Tricare Express Scripts work with many different pharmacy systems. There is a couple that they do not allow. One is Walgreens. They had some problems earlier with CVS, but I am not sure of their status.
We opted for Walmart as they were very easy for us anyway to work with on the road.
I only see me quack once a year, otherwise done via email. Wife goes every six months or less depending on lab work. We find a local lab that will do lab work and fax or email to the quack. Quack emails lab request to us or lab, we do tests and get results via email from doc.

Thank you all for your advise. its beginning to look like our plans for travel will be squashed. My wife does not have a long term relationship with a doctor or a pharmacy. We retired in 08 and have been chasing work since then. I worked in Tennessee and had doctors shut the door in our face due to DEA pressure. I moved to Michigan for another teaching job and it is miserable here, wife cant even climb the stairs with the cold. We want to be full time RVers and chase the sun. The Military diagnosed her back in 2003 and she has been on the meds and taking them responsibly since then. The doc we have now is great but will not write scripts for over thirty days, then only after she passes a urinalysis. Was hoping for better news, we already sold the house and bought the coach hope this works.

I would stay with one pharmacist in your home town and use it exclusively on the road. For example Walmart or CVS. I have had better luck with CVS than Walmart but CVS doesn't have pharmacies in all states. The law for controlled substances is that you must have a long term personal relationship with the same doctor. If you stick with one national pharmacy chain they can see your past prescription history. They can also request a new prescription from the doctor if they need it. They will need to "transfer" the prescription to that location each time you fill it. That takes extra time. I have CHAMPVA and Walgreens does not have an agreement to accept CHAMPVA insurance. I believe it's the same for Tricare.

I've been using Tricare standard since I retired in 94, fulltiming since 06. You might want to check some military healthcare websites before assuming you can be seen, even on a space "A" basis, for routine care. Personally I haven't been inside a military hospital since retiring although I did use a military pharmacy once.

I have stayed at a few famcamps and talked to other retirees. Seemed like a lot of trouble to be seen at the base hospital for other than emergency care. Some were grandfathered in, then kept coming back for annual appointments/test.
