Probably more common than you would want to believe. All a game of how they can confuse you with numbers. And how willing they are to deal. Some better than others, both ways.
When shopping we knew what model and floor plan we wanted. Went to nearest dealer with that model and got a price of $40,000. But looking under it, there was rust covering every inch of metal, on a new unit. He offered to sandblast and repaint, but that didn't appeal to me. Found the exact same model/floorplan at a dealer an hour farther away. He gave me a price of about $43,000. I said sorry, already have a price of $40,000. He said, OK, in that case my price is $39,000!
