We're very much in your similar situation. I'm 4 years from retirement, but 2 years or so from transitioning over to full time. I'm fortunate in that my job only requires a cell phone connection, reliable Internet, and an airport nearby. We just bought a 2016 Grand Design 37' TT and have been using it every chance we get.
With a TT or 5W, it's NOT the journey, it's the destination (which goes contrary to what full-timers would say). As such, it's really important to us to choose a campground that we're going to be comfortable in, and content to stay awhile. Not an easy task, but if you do your homework, they're out there.
We're starting a weekend roadtrip to 10 different campgrounds in Florida and one in Georgia. We're just driving there in the car to get a look at them (not pulling the trailer) so that we can have some first-hand experience with what they look like (amenities, Wifi, cell phone, etc.). That will allow us to pick which ones we really like, and put them on the short list. It's really more of a scouting mission I guess.
If we decide that we like this lifestyle, we'll get rid of the TT and move to a Class A.
Bottom line is you won't really know until you try it. You can't take somebody's word for it, only you can decide if it's right for you.
