skripo, could you clarify what rating you were over for the Explorer?
You stated originally that you were 1020 lbs over your GVWR of the Explorer. Looking at the Durango numbers, you seemed to be focused on the GCWR.
Anyone using all 3 rows for passengers in an SUV is much more likely to be over their GVWR than their GCWR. If you are really over the GVWR 1020 lbs, you need to be looking at tow vehicles with about 1020 lbs more payload than what you have right now.
Maybe it would help if you posted all of the numbers from your weigh?
First I would like to thank you for your informative post. Here are the Numbers:
2013 Ford Explorer Limited V6 FWD towing specs:
GVWCR = 9,980
GVWR = 6,160
Curb Weight = 4,697
Max tow capacity = 5,000
Max tongue with WDH = 500
Weighing results:
Actual tongue weight = 570 LBS
Actual loaded trailer weight = 5200 LBS
Total vehicle weight = 5,800
Front Axle = 2,650
Rear Axle = 3,150
Total weight = 11,000 total.
Again, I have no doubts on the Durango being up to the task, check this consumer reports article:
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2013/10/updated-2014-dodge-durango-proves-tempting-tow-machine/index.htm
Again, all I am trying to ascertain in this post is what sway feels like and did I experience it with the Explorer. So far the answer is no.
Thanks again for that info.
