TT accident in Alachua County Florida

Just watched a horrific RV accident news report this am. They had their TT pulled off the side of the road and a car came careening into the TT. The owners of the TT was out side the TT and was seriously hurt. No pics up on their news site yet. http://www.wcjb.com/local-news

Prayers out to the RV'er. Hope it was not one of our fellow Snowbird members on the way down south for the winter.
  • Most states have laws in place now that one must move to another lane (if possible) or slow down when passing stopped emergency or maintenance vehicles. And I see many that now do the same thing for any vehicle on the road shoulder, which is a good thing.

Several years ago when I was still on the job, I stopped to help a young couple with a flat tire. I turned on my overhead lights and their car as well as mine were well off the roadway. While changing the tire, a passing car veered off the roadway and slammed into the back of my patrol car which then hit the young couples car knocking it off the jack and trapped my arm underneath. I got away with just a minor cut and bad bruise. The guy that hit my car did not fare as well. His blood alcohol level was nearly 3 times the legal limit.

I was talking to a buddy about my first tire change and said that I did it on the side of the road. He said that he'd much rather drive and destroy a rim than risk himself for a tire change along side of the road.

Mine was on the passenger side and I hated every moment on the driver's side of the truck/camper. But even so- on the passenger side, I was toast between it and the wall had something happened.

    X2
I had a flat on my van one night on the passenger side. Should have been a 10 minute fix to pull off and put new tire on.

I pulled off the side of the road as far as I could and every time I went to start changing a car would wiz by within inches of me.
It was like they were ALL moths drawn to the light.:R

I never did get the tire off safely. Had to pay Big $$$ for tow truck to come out for a job that shouldn't have cost me anything.

Really taught me just how unsafe people do drive on the interstates with no sense about a disabled car on the side. :R

I have a toad on my MH for 'just' that reason. If my MH becomes disabled while on the road? I get that toad off ASAP and pack the dogs and me in it and get the hell as far AWAY from the disabled MH as I can and as fast as I can!! :B

  • Back in 2010, I was towing a toad with my a class A. Someone pointed at my toad while I was driving. I looked in the mirror and saw something fell off my toad. It had a flat tire. There was a guardrail right next to the shoulder. Had I pulled off, there really was not much space between the highway and the shoulder to change the tire due to guardrail.

I decided to slow down to 45 MPH, which was the slowest legal speed and drove 10 miles until I get off the off ramp. Man, that was the long stretch of highway with guardrail I ever saw.

I felt safer to change the tire off the highway than on the highway. It caused more damage to the toad, but better to the toad than me.

Clicky, but it looks like that link is not specific to that story.

What I am finding out is some of these small news stations don't put their current news up on their web site to view until the following day. Right now all that is on their site is yesterdays broadcast.

The video clip of the accident that aired on TV early this morning it looked like the car hit it so hard the TT blew apart. :(

    I couldn't find the clip...
I live in this community and watch this News program. You're more likely to hear about a dog in California with a good survival story than you are to hear about anything locally interesting.
  • I do every thing possible NOT to stop/park on the side of the road...

in the past year.. several police cars with overhead lights on got rear ended..
    here in Ohio.

BLIND drivers are out to get all of us.. ( I did not see the police car )... with its lights on in the dark...
