We went to our local RV show two weeks ago and saw a whole lot of ugly rigs. I kept walking into FWs with high hopes, only to hear the violin music from "Psycho" start playing in my head as I looked around.
Manufacturers seem obsessed with huge livingrooms and tiny, cramped kitchens. I do not use the living room when camping. I use the kitchen constantly.
Why are all the stoves placed flush against a wall cabinet on one side? How am I supposed to cook if there's no room for pot handles or for my elbows when I'm stirring something? Why is there a residential refrigerator in a unit that will spend so many hours unplugged from the grid?
I spend 8-10 out of every 24 hours in the bedroom, but the bedroom is another cramped, cave-like area. I'm 6'5". There's no earthly reason for me to hit my head on the ceiling in the bedroom of a high-profile FW. There's no reason why I should have to go down to the living area to find enough free floor space to get dressed in the morning.
While I'm on the subject of headroom, why should I have to shower in a phone booth? Even in units that have large, rectangular shower pans, the glass doors for the shower have a metal bar across the top at CHEST HEIGHT. Why? Getting doors a foot taller doesn't cost much. Why does the bathroom door open into the hallway in a direction that blocks access to the bedroom? Couldn't they just have used a pocket door if space was that tight?
Why are there whole rooms I cannot access with the slides in? When I'm packing the rig to go away, I don't run the slides out first. I'm in storage, for crying out loud. What if I stop overnight at the Mart of Wal to catch some much-needed Zs? Oops... can't go into the bedroom at all with the living room slide in. I saw at least three units with that bone-headed design.
Why bother to put a big 19' awning on a unit, and then occupy half of the shaded space with a slideout? Couldn't you have put that slide on the curb side of the coach instead?
Why is the wallpaper textured to look and feel like a burlap sack?
I just want to draw up my idea of the "ideal" layout and mail it off to all of the RV manufacturers. It's frustrating.
