There are a lot of insurance companies that advertise things like $20.00 gets you insurance" For about 2 days
You get your proof, you go to DMV, Get your registration, never make another payment and are cancelled 2-weeks to a month .. DMV is notified but alas. nobody broadcasts to the police.

Magistrate asks "How do you plead" (Not guilty)
Did you have insurance? (NO)
Well then you are Guilty, the fine is $100.00

I'm going to have to charge you with Contempt, that's a serious charge You are going to have to go before Judge ______

Judge Young man you are charged with contempt of court, that is a serious charge, How do you plead (NOT GUILTY AND F!!! Y!!)
Judge young man you have something to learn, You hafe a year in prison to learn it.

OH, since then many traffic offenses have been converted to Civil crimes (Back then it was a misdemeanor).
