We have a 37' 5th wheel and don't even own a truck. The camping spirit runs through the family, and there are plenty of trucks available to haul us the 1/2 hour trip twice a year. Now we're in the market for a tiny camper for when the travel mood hits. Best of both worlds.
I have a few friends that would do the same for us, or I know of a towing company that will haul it for a couple hundred bucks to anywhere close by. Longer trips we're out of luck though, would have to rent a truck or something.
We're not really "on a whim" type people, so this seasonal site at one place thing works well for us right now. The best (and worse) part is there are nightly rental sites around us, so we always meet new people. Sometimes it is a hit and we have a really good time, sometimes we get told that "another party until 2am will not be tolerated". In that instance it was a friend and I who sat up by the fire having a few drinks and talking, nothing more. No music, no loud laughter, just idle chat.
I guess their definition of party differs from my own.
