Retreads are prohibited on the steer wheels (I think that is DOT and not just state) and there are other limits as well. Time was I ran lots of retreads and had little issue apart from the fact that tires were an expense just a little below fuel.

I see what you're saying, although I can't fully agree that brand new tires have the same failure rate as retreads. It's just a shame when someone hits a gator on the highway, even though their insurance company will pay for the damage it caused, they're still stuck with a huge deductible, maybe $500+
