Just get a large print atlas that shows each state. It should work well. We also travel secondary roads and just pick our route depending on what we want to explore along the way. Never had a problem.
If you travel the western states a lot you might want to invest in the Benchmark series of road atlases. They are awesome and show clearly even gravel roads and lots of information on them for public parks, campgrounds, attraction. We had one for each western state as that's where we mostly traveled.
