Using Closed Truck Weigh Station?

In another thread it was observed that some folks have weighed their camping rigs at closed highway weigh stations, specifically in Washington and Oregon.

Who else has done this in other states and can you provide any insight as to the process and legality of doing so?

  • Montana also, I suspect it's done in every state and province
  • I am in Canada and our province leaves the scales on when the station is closed so the public can use it. I have weighed my unit hooked up and then unhooked and weighed trailer and then the truck. I even weighed side to side and each tire.

  • Unless signed no entry or gated, it is perfectly legal to use DOT scales while they are closed. We do here in Idaho all the time. Have also used them in Florida. Also, if it is on a secondary road and the scale is open but not busy, most scale operators will be more than happy to weigh you.
  • The equipment is left on and the displays even turned around so we can see them. There's no question of legality, they leave them this way for all to use.
