A 30 amp receptacle, like most other electrical components, are designed to accept a continuous load of 80% of it's rating. A 30 amp system should operate on no more than 24 amps continuous. The 30 amp rating is for short term uses. As you increase a continuous load above the 24 amps you increase heat, whch increases resistance, which increases heat and a terrible cycle begins. Things start melting. Hopefully it stops there. Nowadays, everything is electric. You have to add up all of those computer, gameboy, cell phone chargers. That flat panel tv, plus the on outside. The extra fridge and ice maker. It all adds up quick. Throw in some heat outside and your a/c compressor doesn't get a break until sundown. Take a look at some amperages for items: A/C-13 amps, water heater 8 amps, converter 1 amp, flat panel tv 1.5 amps and refrigerator on electric 5 amps. Note, these are low end rating and you are already at 28.5 amps. When you first set up it's all on at once. Something goes off, but don't forget all of the chargers and other plug ins. 30 amps is not much for todays needs. I wouldn't be suprised to see small rigs with 50 amp cords as the standard as we plug in more and more. Don't forget to shut the power off before plugging and unplugging your camper. Keep an eye on the spades of your plug and keep them clean, too.
