At the risk of being a bit too simplistic, where was the cord laying (lying? this conundrum baffles me to this day). If it was in the direct sun, a black cord can get painfully hot from solar gain alone. I have seen them so hot they couldn't be held, and people had to hose them down to handle them. And I am not in areas known to be our nation's hot spots.
