Ok a 10,000 lb trailer towed by a 6,000 lb TV.
Also from measurements in accident video I estimate the trailer was about 30 feet long.
They are also saying not enough TV.
I'll agree that it's 30 feet after putting it in Paint and measuring the combo. I don't know what model it is but I took the first Jayco Flight bunkhouse I found about 30 feet long and its GVWR is about 7,000 pounds. I'm seeing the Ford Explorer (if that was an Explorer) rated at 2,000 to 5,000 pounds towing capacity, and the Ford F150 rated at 7,000 to 12,000 pounds. I'd go with the F150 and I still think he didn't have enough tow vehicle and that was a main contributor to his loss of control.
Correction: Another poster said it is a Ford Expedition which has a towing capacity of 6,600 pounds. I still think that's not enough and a contributing factor to the loss of control.
I tow a 30' which weighs 5800lb empty, definitely not 10,000 as some are saying.
I just went through hell and back with my 6" shorter wheelbase LR3 and experienced ZERO scary or even potentially scary moments. And yeah you get a feel for your safety margins, which seemed very good. Tractor trailers, winds, thunderstorms, etc. There are some mechanical differences, but I can't think of too many - basics put it fairly similar to my LR3. I'm not sure if air suspension and the stability programs would make a difference, but air suspension was also an option on the expedition.
In any event - even if this guy was going 70+, what he was doing is still fairly benign. He's just chugging along. If he randomly lost it for no reason except a tiny TV, how does anyone survive thunderstorms, horrible roads, trucks blowing by you, etc etc.
My point is, something else HAD to be in play here.
The expedition is based on Ford's P2 pickup truck platform. I doubt most would have an issue if this was an F150 with the exact same engine, trans diffs, etc. I know there's a wheelbase, axle, spring difference, but the Expedition wheelbase isn't too bad for an SUV, and it didn't appear to be sagging from what I recall.
I REALLY HOPE someone follows up on this and they publish some more details.
Regardless of everyones opinions and thoughs, no one can argue that watching something like that happen (the entire event) is everyones worst nightmare.
