I live in Austin where people trying swoop/squats, backing up, or just going the wrong way on a major street is commonplace. My suggestions:
Dash cam. A good dash cam is important, and if someone tries an insurance fraud item, it will be useful for convictions.
Drive a bigger vehicle. Yes, the MPG on a smaller car is great, but you pay the price dearly in a wreck.
Do an insurance "tune up". Are you covered with medical bills (personal injury protection.) Are you covered in Canada? Do you have enough coverage if you wind up getting rear-ended, then ramming the vehicle in front? (If someone is in front in a chain collision, their lawyers will sue every single person behind them.) Do you have coverage for a upfitted RV, not just a bare chassis? Do you have wrecker coverage? Do you have uninsured/underinsured coverage? I live in Austin, and hit and runs happen all the time, since there is little criminal penalty for doing so, even if someone his hurt or killed.
 Situational awareness.
