I think too many people have come to rely on Walmart for a FREE spot to camp so they don't have to fork out $35 a night for a real camp spot. And the attitude that if Walmart takes away the free camping then you'll take your business elsewhere is childish. Walmart offered a free service for the occasional camper but it apparently got abused by some.
AZ,
I hear this a lot.
"You can afford to drive that, you should be able to afford a 25~50$ campsite for the night."
My usual response is something like:
Why should I buy what I neither need nor want?
- If any campground has an overnight park here with no services for 10$, I might consider it.
We don't need:
- Your Electric power.
- Your very poor Wifi.
- Your bad testing water.
- Your .... dump.
- Your pool full of screaming, jumping and ill-behaved children.
So, you want us to pay for all that when all we want is a flat place?
This is just a part of the reason why we travel the way we do.
Do you often buy a meal you do not plan to eat?
Same - Same.
Then there is the availability problem. Many campgrounds are not open when we are traveling as we try to stay away from "family vacation" times. That plus in much of the north there are very few campgrounds that are even open before Memorial Day and after Labor Day.
Walmart is actually different than that. We often overnight there (it is not preferred) and when we do, we take the opportunity to make up provisions and other general needs they can supply.
