I'd contact Wal*Mart directly to ask that question. It could be your community passed an ordinance to ban it, which is usually the case, not the store stopping them. Our local store does not have such a sign.

Usually it is just a local municipal issue. There was one we used to stop at, nice driving distance from home going south, then last year noticed signs prohibiting over night parking. We asked the Walmart manager, he said it was OK with his store, but the county would probably ticket or tow. As we were leaving, saw the same signs (with the county ordinance number) at every parking lot and driveway back to the highway

As far as I've heard - it is still an individual store policy.

Many stores do not allow it because the really don't have the space and access for overnight parking.

Many stores have dropped allowing overnight parking because of some people thinking it was a free campground. Setting up chairs and the BBQ, staying for several days, etc.

Some cities such as where I live, have modified their zoning to not allow overnight occupied parking (sleeping in the rig or truck) in store parking lots.

I've seen people with extension cords run to jury rigged outlets in parking lot light poles. I've seen people with their grey water draining out of a water hose onto the parking lot/ ground/ storm drains. I've seen people leave bags of trash in the middle of the parking lot as they left.

People used to treat an overnight stop at a Walmart as a thank you from the store for RVers patronage.

Many people today treat an overnight stop at a Walmart today as their 'right' do use the parking lot any way they wish.

Common sense does not exist.
Many feel they have rights and entitlements and, are exempt from laws and regulations....unfortunately. :(

We pulled into the one in Homestead, Florida with just our pick up to do some shopping and I happened to notice signs that prohibited it.
It is one of the biggies before heading to the Keys, and there used to always be a bunch of rigs overnighting there although we never did.
I like full hookups even if it is just for overnight.

Here is what happens.. There is an outfit known as the Campground Owners Assn. They take stories like one that recently appeared here about a "Bad Egg" dumping his sewage in other than an approved manner and they go to the city, county or state government and petittion for a law that says No Overnight RV parking save in a licensed campground.

They cite all sorts of .. Well, Politeness does not let me properly describe it but suffice to say "Stuff that goes into the black tank" fits. to support their claims.

And the City, County or State agrees with them and passes a law or ordinance or regulation prohibiting "Wal*Marting" .

Then the signs go up, as required by law.

In a very few cases.. there are other reaons, For example a "neighborhood Wal*Mart" may not have that much parking lot. but most all the "No overnight parking" lots are due to the government, not Wal*mart.

So, please ask them why the signs went up and get back with us.

Some background on me: I really do not like Wal*Mart all that much, many reasons I choose not to list here since they are kind of political, but.. I REALLY REALLY REALLY do not like seeing them blamed for what the government is doing to you.

The signs may be a result of government reaction, but is seems that the intial cause is the campground association or the individual campground owners putting the pressure on the government.

I'm certainly not pro government but let's lay the blame in the right spot.

Funny, but my little home town of Dallas, Texas and the surrounding suburbs all have ordinances against overnighting in parking lots. There are no RV parks anywhere near the Walmarts in these communities, I seriously doubt that the park owners 30 miles away hold enough sway to get such ordinances passed. The real reason is the people that live in the surrounding neighborhoods don't want transients living in their communities, be it in RVs at the Walmart or in cardboard boxes under a bridge. Don't you think that a Walmart, with it's billions upon billions of dollars of resources could politically outmaneuver a mom and pop campground owner if it was in their best interests?
