For weekend camping I close mine, but when wintering in Fla I have a sunscreen attached so I anchor it down with stakes. No damage in five years.
To each his own. BUt I never play with fire. When we leave for any length of time, awning goes up. Period.
It`s not the weight of the screen room, but the fact they don`t let any wind under them to lift the awning. You`de be surprised how much lift the wind has even with the buckets. staking it into the ground is a bit better, but I have seen the awning rip along the trailer because something has to give. I only put ours in if there is high wind or were going to be gone. I leave it out for rain so I can sit out.
