Was all set on a Class B+ then saw a Class A

I was all set on a 07 BT Cruiser 5291 on a Ford chassis, had the Rv inspected and everything checked out. Spoke to the seller and they seem like great people, they bought the RV new and kept it in great shape.

Then saw a local listing for a 07 Georgetown 350 bunkhouse model on a Ford chassis, with not much going on this weekend we decided to go and look at it. Wow it was a real nice unit and having bunks would be great as we have two kids ages 11 and 9.

Now I am totally confused, both unit will cost about the same because I would need to spend on airfare and gas getting the BT home. My questions are

1. This being our first RV should we stick with a B+ or is an A ok for us.
2. Will A cost more in maintenance, I saw several post about folks having a hard time finding someone to repair their A
3. We plan to towe a car on a dolly, which is better rv is better equipped
4. I have not seen the BT Cruiser that we are buying but I have seen several used ones for sale and one thing I noticed is that the materials (sofa, tv, carpet, etc.) in the Georgetown seems to be higher grade materials.

What do you guys think, again price wise it's about the same but my wife likes the B+ because of its size and drivability, but like the A for the additional of the bunks. We didn't test drive either yet because of weather.

  • Based on the options given, I would go for the Class A for your situation.

    I know you're only asking about drivables, but is there a reason you aren't considering a truck and a trailer?

    For a young family that, I'm assuming, will be weekenders, I really think you will get a lot more out of a trailer than a motorhome.

    Best of luck in whatever you choose. This is a great hobby that my parents got me into and my almost-three-year-old son already loves. Just today he said "let's go camping." :B

    Lots of campgrounds have a limited number of pull through sites so it helps to have a class C or B MH that can be backed into a site.     I totally disagree with the above comments.

    We full-timed in a 40' Class A for ten years. Our first choices were always national parks, state parks, forest service campgrounds, county and city parks. We loved boondocking down gravel roads with a lake or river all to ourselves. We found it very easy to find spots.
  • Also, some class C models have a very low CCC. so low that sometimes 4 people could max it out!
  • We thought about a TT and actually already had one picked out but our reason for wanting an MH is because we want to also enjoy the ride to wherever we're going. We are planning on a west coast trip and want to be able to use the rest room or get snacks when needed.

    That was my other concern with the B+.....low ccc

    With the B+ I would need to add cost of flight and gas to get it home where the A is local to me (an hour away), so from a $ perspective I think the A will cost me $2-3k more....depending on how much the seller is willing to come down on price.

    This brings up a very good point. The tires on the B+ probably cost around $200 a piece. The Class A tires (bigger I assume) can cost up in the range of $500 a piece. Think about that so when you have to replace them. The tire/wheel spare for the B+ will probably weigh around 80lbs. One from a Class A is much heavier. Plus Class A's don't usually carry a spare. The B+ may have a spare or you can get one.
