If there powered by gas then I think they look dangerous just by themselves. After all you have to pump them up to compress the canister. Looks like a bomb waiting to happened to me.
There are lost of bombs out there waiting to happen if used improperly.

However the hassles and potential problems of white gas probably contribute significantly to the decrease in those models we see today and the increase in the propane fueled models.
I will say that to me, the older model seems to have more heat / light than the propane versions.
