According to this website http://goldengatebridge.org/tolls_traffic/tollplazaconfiguration.php (I know, the internet never lies.) the wide lanes are 11' 10" wide.

There is a sentence in the story that says:

"The RV driver struck the left side of the No. 2 lane but it had enough clearance to drive through the 10 feet, 6 inch wide lane, bridge district spokesperson Priya Clemens said."

So regardless of the Wide Lane signs above those lanes, maybe they are not 10' 6". Maybe there is another lane not shown in the photo which is wider and is 10' 6". But the Wide Lane signs above those lanes makes it look they would be the widest lanes. I think if I was driving an RV I would slow to about 10 MPH to go through a toll booth. I hope that doesn't upset too many people.

I have to say that depth perception is everything and it's dang hard to judge a toll booth. I've whacked the dummy poles on the Ohio Turnpike more than once with the mirrors on my Western Star Conventional and caught the front edge of my covered wagon too. It's close and I really take my time. Not a hard hit but enough to move the mirror and wake me up (startle me).

I suspect the driver was allowing what he (or she) thought was enough room, and wasn't. I tend to always use the outside toll booths whenever possible. Toll roads like the PA pike and the Illinois tollways have no booths at all. You just drive under the transponder overhead. Much simpler and easier. (of course you do need an easy pass transponder....lol)

If I have to use an inboard booth, I always creep in, as slow as possible. No point in screwing up anything. Believe me, the dummy poles do not move.

Yea it is plenty wide. Driver missed the center.

Not unusual. I sat at the entrance of the OTPK one day and watched many RV's and semi's wack the dummy poles. I'm not alone and neither is the Rv driver.

Actually has nothing to do with centering the vehicle, more about judging the distance on both sides and it's hard to do, especially when you get older....like me.

Like I said in a previous post, you go in SLOWLY and take your time.... or you use an outside booth (like I do most times).

My first thought when I saw that picture was "good thing he wasn't in Ohio". He would have had that tollbooth dead center in the windshield! Them tollbooths are tight.

I hug the left side......making sure my mirror clears.
If it clears rest of rig will too

If not...mirror just folds back and I give it another shot
