I just read in the manual, Page 57 in this PDF ... the page number is 51, that leaving water in the water heater can contaminate and permanently damage the water heater. We left the camper a week ago...

Now just where did you read that?? Urban myth! I do regularly (once per season) drain mine and rinse it thoroughly with a 'rinse extension' on my hose.
