I have the campco water regulator. First time I used it no problem. Since then we get horrible water pressure. I take it off when we shower then put it back on. Is it just because it's a cheap 10$ reg...

You got your $10 work out of that preset regulator...1-2 times use before they clog up
Watts or even a Valterra ADJUSTABLE water pressure regulator is much better choice.
I prefer and have used for 10yrs the Watts Brand. A bit more pricey but rebuild-able should the need arise.
Set it for 50# (static---no flow) enjoy.
FYI.....
On-board pump will not start unless city water pressure is low enough to trip pump set point pressure switch. And if pressure low enough then pump discharge pressure will CLOSE the city water inlet check valve.
So either flow if from pump or from city water ----not both
