WD and air bags

I have a 2005 excursion and there has been issues with suspension I installed a Hellwig sway bar and new bilstein steering damper. I am in the process of installing air lift air bags.Question is, should I inflate to normal height and adjust wd hitch?

  • Short answer - yes, inflate till rear height is normal unloaded height (no higher!), then adjust WDH for the correct amount of "rise" in the front suspension on the TV. Ideally, you should get some weights to determine if all is good.

Do a search on "airbags" and you should get quite a few hits, as it's a common question.
  • I would say IMHO that you need to go weigh it a a scale and see how much wt you ahve on ea axle, then adjust from there. I have used a Reese Dual Cam for years. They prevent sway when the wind blows or when big trucks pass you. You know they are going to pass you because the speed limit in Texas is 80 MPH some places. They are not responsible if you lose control of your TT.
  • I own a 2005 Excursion 4X4 and I recently added air bags. My trailer has a 1200 lb tongue weight. If your tongue weight is around 500 - 600 lbs or so, I would just use the air bags to level the truck and forget about the WDH. If more than about 600 lbs, use a WDH to get some weight back onto the front axle and then pump the air bags up just until the back of the truck rises but don't raise it up (or you will unload the WDH). The airbags will take the bounce out of the back of the Excursion and stiffen it up quite well. It was money well spent.
  • I don't know for sure. I did have a 2000 F250 Lariat that had factory air bags. I would hitch up, retract the tongue jack, then the bags would automatically inflate. I did notice that they did not inflate very much. I had put heavy loads in the bed without the trailer and they would raise the back end considerably. Hope this helps.
