WD hitch question

If my Fully loaded TT weighs in at 5,500 lbs, and my WD hitch says its good to 6k, would it be advisable to move up to the next weight class WD hitch just to be a little safer, or just go with the present setup? My inclination would be to go with the heavier
Hitch and have that extra margin of safety. Since I am still in the shopping phase, I appreciate any replies.
Thanks

  • No reason I can think of for exceeding the rating on the hitch. It's NEVER a good idea to exceed the GVWR of the trailer regardless of the hitch.
  • I don't understand why they even give that rating. The important rating is the tongue weight. Typically a 6,000# WDH is good for 600# tongue weight. The WDH compensates for tongue weight, the total weight of the trailer is unimportant.

In example: My TH has a GVW of 6,000 but a tongue weight of 1,000# to 1,100#. I use a 12,000# WDH, not a 6,000# WDH.
  • Don't know for sure what you are asking but if you are talking the part that bolts to the tow rig frame yes and no. If the rig is rated to tow more than the 6,000 then yes I would upgrade. if the rig is rated at 6,000 max towing, then no I would not upgrade.

So you are 500 lbs UNDER you capacity. . Stay there. Bigger is not always better. Going too high will cause the TV, and TT to bounce, well not really bounce, more of a jerking motion.
