WDH tow ratings

I looked and didn't see this exact question. But, how important is the hitch weight rating on a friction WDH hitch like an E2 or Equalizer or any for that matter.

I bought an Aspen Trail 1700BH 21.5 foot 3200 UVW travel trailer with 435 hitch weight. The dealer was going to put an E2 92-00-0450 with a 450 lbs. hitch rating and max weight rating of 4,500 lbs.

I asked about the dry hitch weight of like 435 lbs noting that once I put the battery and propane and hitch "stuff" on, you were going to be over 500 lbs. So, I asked about the next size up and how much and they charged me 10 bucks more for the 94-00-0600 round bar with a 600 lbs. hitch weight rating and a 6,000 lbs. max rating.

I can see why they went with a Trunnion on the original as the trailer is very low from the factory. I flipped the axle and it raised about 6 to 8 inches. I'm OK with the round bar and only cuss a little bit putting them on or taking them off.

So, the core question is how important is the hitch weight rating in the overall equation? The dealer was putting one on that seemed a bit light??? I went safe and it didn't cost much.

  • A WDH is rated for the maximum trailer weight to be drawn and maximum tongue weight to be put on the ball. You did the right thing.
  • Now that you own the trailer. get it weighed! Search here for the proper way to weigh to get all the numbers the weight police (ha ha) want here.
  • Dealer is wrong to even let you come close to exceeding weight limit. Avoid that guy. Who was it?
  • You did it right.
Not only the stuff you mentioned but a lot more tongue weight comes from the trailer load, especially if you have a front bed with the storage underneath. You will likely have a loaded tongue weight of closer to that 600#.
You didn't state your GTWR. I suspect that is between 5 & 6K#.
I think your dealer was trying to unload that hitch on you to clear out stock.
