The guard told us that we where now 'in the computer' (whatever that mean't).
Our experience was similar - the first crossing headed into Canada, our motorhome was thoroughly (but politely) searched. We gave them our dogs' immunization info, etc. And then once in the computer, border crossings into Canada were easy-peasy: we handed them our passports, recited our license number, and we were on our way. This also held true the following year when we visited Nova Scotia - no "first search" that time.
Coming back into the lower United States was a teeny bit more complicated - they wanted to see our bag of dog food, etc.
I don't know if we'll go through the search process again with a different RV, but we LOVE Canada and plan to visit again. I think the key to easy border crossings (both ways) is simply DON'T LIE about what you have on board; and be pleasant to the guards.
Another thing to remember coming back into the US: don't bring any "organic" souvenirs - no animal parts, or walking sticks made from branches, etc. They WILL get confiscated.
