Things learned, has a trigger lock on your weapon, and store the ammo in a different place, and have your weapon in a locked compartment.
....
So, I'm not quite understanding. Were you crossing the border with a weapon Not locked away with the ammo separately locked away? Or are you just reminding everyone?
Probably wasn't locked down and unloaded. Who carries a gun like that?
If you've got the gun locked down and the ammo locked up separately, what's the use?
Then it's like having an expensive stick and box of odd shaped rocks!
When I transport my gun in a vehicle, I carry it pretty much like that (save for the locks)--unloaded in its case, with the ammunition carried in a separate container. If one is carrying the gun for the purpose of transporting it from one place to another, so as to hunt or target shoot or whatever there, it makes no sense to me to do otherwise. Transporting a loaded gun is rather more dangerous and, under some circumstances, is illegal where transporting the same gun unloaded would be legal.
I've heard of people who have accidentally shot themselves removing their (loaded) rifles from their vehicles when the trigger got caught on a seat belt buckle or something. I do not want to ever be one of those unfortunate people.
