I've been to Canada many times, and the border crossing is no big deal. Buy your alcohol and tobacco at the duty-free store, don't try to import perishable foods, and be pleasant to the man in the booth.
That said, a co-worker once made the error of trying to cross into Canada for a family day trip to Niagara Falls while they had a foreign exchange student with them. After discovering at the last minute their guest had forgotten her passport, he decided to wing it.
