I've been to Canada many times, and the border crossing is no big deal. Buy your alcohol and tobacco at the duty-free store, don't try to import perishable foods, and be pleasant to the man in the booth.
That said, a co-worker once made the error of trying to cross into Canada for a family day trip to Niagara Falls while they had a foreign exchange student with them. After discovering at the last minute their guest had forgotten her passport, he decided to wing it. As soon as the guard heard her accent, he asked for her passport, and that's when the trouble started. My co-worker was informed that human trafficking is a serious crime. Several anxious hours later, they were allowed to return to the US.
