My good friend and his wife attempted to visit Canada a couple of years ago and got diverted to the inspection area. They had to get out of their vehicle and got the 101 questions while they watched their vehicle get the complete inspection. After the Canadian inspectors did not find anything they were told they can proceed. Out of curiosity my friend asked them why were they targeted while the rest were allowed to pass. He was told because of his Texas license plates which meant to the Canadian inspectors that they must of been carrying guns.
They decided to turn around and will never go back!
Their loss. Canada is a beautiful country full of friendly people. Would they have been equally upset if they were "targeted" by US Customs upon their return? I have been questioned and inspected just as thoroughly by the guys on the US side as by Canadian customs.
