Weighed the F150 Ecoboost & Fun Finder Xtra XT245 toy hauler

This toy hauler has a yellow sticker that says it weighed 5025 lbs. at the factory. Truck and camper were loaded with two people, two dirt bikes, two sets of riding gear and tools, spares and 10 extra gallons of gasoline as well as food, linens, utensils, grill, etc., etc., but NO WATER.

The truck had 707 pounds of people and stuff in it above the sticker weight, including the spray in bed liner, tonneau cover and fire extinguisher. The trailer had 1715 pounds of stuff in it above the sticker weight.

The rear axle was 50 pounds under the limit and the truck GVW was 180 pounds under the limit. I can't figure how some folks are towing some toy haulers much larger and heavier than this one with a 7100 pound GVWR truck.

What kind of hills will you be towing on. The 3:55 axle ratio will make the transmission work pretty hard. ThevECO boost engine will be fine. Need to watch the trans temp.

I wouldn't worry too much about the transmission. Our TT weighs a bit more than that, and the transmission temps barely move. We've towed a lot of mountains here in Utah.

  • What size bars do you have on the wd? IMO they should be 1000lbs bars...

Use this calculator. Its so much easier..

It shows you have 780 lb tongue at 11.6%

It would be nice to see after your adjustment what you get for tongue and %....

I tow with a 10% percentage. I restored the front axle to stock height with the WD... to the lb dead on..

This is the WD instructions I believe....

  • The WD bars were no longer parallel to the ground after the extra lift, so I will need to add more washers to the EAZ-Lift hitch to realign the hitch head.

Yes definatly... Measuring the front wheel fender height only gives a ball park.

I assume you have a chain system? How many links were left? I think most say 5 links min...

Yes add more washers and crank it up. Get the weight back on the front. Dont worry about height. The scales dont lie..

The rule is to restore the weight to the front axle as close as you can get without going over from the stock truck alone weight.. Never go over .

    Let us know.

Post back the weights when you fine tune and let us know that the ride quality improved or not...
  • After I weighed it, I lifted the WD bars one more chain link and brought the 3/4" front wheel well rise back down to only 3/8" above the no trailer height. Ford says to regain half of the lift. I didn't have time to reweigh it. I'll check it the next time I go out. The WD bars were no longer parallel to the ground after the extra lift, so I will need to add more washers to the EAZ-Lift hitch to realign the hitch head.
  • You need to set up the wd better. You probably need to increase the angle on the ball. Then go up a link or two and reweigh.

You want to restore the front axle closer to the truck alone weight.

    Basically about 160 pounds.

Being 50lbs from the rear axle rate is looking for trouble...

Take a pic of the WD system..
  • Re-reading the weights,, it looks like the front axle lost 220 pounds when hitched to the trailer, thus the 1,000 pounds added to the rear axle is some front axle weight too. Only 60 pounds is transferred back to the front axle, while 60 is transferred to the trailer axles.

  • Looks like you are at just about the right trailer limits for your truck!

Anything more, and it seems like it will go over one weight rating or another. I know a guy who bought a 1983 F-150 and towed a 24' Winderness fifth wheel with it. It was way before I knew anything about GVWR, or hitch weight, and I am sure it went way over both! He later traded it in on a dually 1986 F-350 with 460" engine. (the current 6.9L diesel was pretty guttless in 1986, so the 460" was the towing king with 225 rated HP!).

It seems like if you tighten up the WD bars one more notch, then you can transfer some more weight to the trailer tires and front axle, thus getting some more weight off the rear axle, and allowing you to carry more fresh water.
