Weight Distribution hitch..

Hey guys, I know this has been beat to death, but my wife and I will be picking up our new TT this coming week. It's a done deal. Currently we have a smaller TT and an Eaz-Lift WDH 1000/10,000lbs. Our new TT is a 2014 Salem by Forest River 29 UD3, it's 36.5 ft long, dry weight of 7900#s and a "declared" hitch weight of 984#s, and a heavy weight of 11,00ish. We have to upgrade our hitch so I've been looking at the Reese Straightline with sway control, and the Equilizer. I think I'm set on the Reese Straightline but I'm wondering if 1200#/12,000#s will be enough. I've read on here about the hitch weight "always" being more than declared. We have three kids and always pack pretty heavy, can you guys throw some thoughts out to me? Thanks in advance..Phil

EDIT: Also which Reese Straightline is recommended..trunnion bars..or round bars..Thanks to all.

  • Maybe, take a look at BlueOx Swaypro. Blue Ox has one with 1500 lb bars. Built in dual sway control. They've had good reviews here on the forum.

Maybe, but it would depend on actual tongue weight not exceeding 1200#. I prefer the trunnion bars for my set up. The Reese Dual Cam set up works extraordinarily well for me.
  • I currently have the Reese. I like it, but it needs fine tuning when you get it. especially if you make some sort of change. The Equal-i-zer 4P will probably be my hitch of choice when I get my next trailer.

If you get the Reese, The round bars are better for hitches that are mounted on top of the frame and the trunions are better for hitches mounted on the bottom of the frame.

    EDIT
I knew I posted about this already.
