Will adjustment to the weight distribution hitch transfer extra weight off the rear axle?
I would try to take up an extra link if I were you. You might also be able to fuss around with the head angle a bit to transfer some of the weight, if you can't get another link.
For example, my trailer has 1200lbs of tongue weight and my front axle weight is within about 150lbs of my unloaded weight.
There are some good video online that will discuss how to properly setup/adjust the hitch.
