I;ve swapped ends a few times, intentionally drove off the left side of the road, once. Keeping some situational awareness and lowering speed is about all the prevention one can do. If the ice is slippery enough, and the vehicle has started to lose equilibrium, any heroic straightening measures may not be enough.
Good to hear that the OP didn't have any critical injuries and that the voyage had just started. With the trailer hooked up, things may have been a lot more catastrophic.
