Maybe a reduced amount of deceleration is "A Good Thing" under these circumstances. The vehicle WILL slow down due to wind resistance and friction alone.
.......... I don't agree with putting the car in neutral. Taking your foot off the gas should be enough. This is a quote from a legal forum (regarding accident liability): "Putting the car in neutral will actually decrease the friction and drag in the drive train making it more difficult to stop because there in nothing slowing you down but brakes (which will easily lock up in icy conditions)."
And a vehicle with ABS will NOT lock the wheels if the brakes are applied.
I'd suggest that "Legal Forum" needs to bring itself up to date!
Crowe, Stopping is not the point, regaining control of the direction the vehicle is going is far more important. Rolling wheels have directional control, locked up don't!!!
Once the coefficient of friction is exceed, you have to be going a lot slower to get the grip back!! Control is far more important on ice than stopping, which is VERY Difficult.
