I haven't addressed the problem yet, but I'm 95% certain I need a new gasoline filter. As it stands the filter is okay when my engine needs are "only" 6-7mpg, but when they dropped to maybe 2mpg on the long grade the fuel pump wasn't able to get an adequate supply of gasoline to the fuel injectors due to a partially clogged gasoline filter.
I'm currently in LA visiting my daughter for Thanksgiving (drove my Caravan) so I won't be replacing the gasoline filter until I return. However, it's a simple repair and when I remove the old filter I'll "test" it by blowing through it and see how easily it passes air. That'll give me a somewhat subjective answer as to its condition. Anyway, filters are cheap.
