Louis Lamour has some good ones, but once and a while some of them seem like romance novels. Ray Hogan is good. I also am looking for good books on frontier life, as I am searching for a way to somehow find a happy medium between that and modern life.
Look to larry McMurtry for really interesting takes on the frontier. Look back several pages I listed several of his books. He wrote Lonesome Dove.
