This was our solution when we first started. Our TV could not handle a sizeable fully enclosed unit, and we were new to camping - so we didn't want to take to big of a swing until we knew if/how we were going to use it. We bought a hybrid, used it for 2 years to learn more of what we wanted, then upgraded the tow vehicle to a 3/4 ton Suburban, which allowed us to follow up by upgrading the TT.
A hybrid would give you a little more room within the ratings of your Suburban, and would keep your costs a little lower as you learn what you really want out of camping. It's not the best approach for everyone, but it was perfect for us - and our situation was very similar to yours with a lower capacity TV, 3 young kids who were 2, 5 and 6 at the time, dog, etc...
