Good post, Grit Dog! It's natural for any of us to give advice in the context of our own experiences, but for guys new to RVing, we need to remember that HOW, WHEN, and WHERE they're going to tow are just as important in equipment selection as WHAT they're going to tow.
OP has a family of 5, and with kids come bikes and toys, so a 5K trailer will put the rig right at GCWR, but that doesn't mean a bad tow or an early death for the truck. I only recommended the taller gears and trans cooling because the OP said he wanted to head up into the mountains.
