My opinion for what it's worth
Is forget about it, it did not ruin your trip, it did not leave you broke
And in the big scheme of the trip, the cost difference is not worth the fretting and worrying
Chalk it up to lesson learned
Most of the time it's find your campsite then register and pay
Only crowded places that are constantly booked (like Calif beach campgrounds) Are assigned at the gate,
even if that state park was assigned only Pay first, it is what is
