I think I will follow the advice here and get a name brand base plate and then buy a used tow bar off craigslist. Does anyone see any issues with buying used? Maybe that will also help the original poster.
No issues buying used if you know what you need and want. Do your homework.
The base plate and it's installation for a Jeep Cherokee is fairly simple and can be a DIY project. They are also common and used equipment should be fairly available.
