I think I will follow the advice here and get a name brand base plate and then buy a used tow bar off craigslist. Does anyone see any issues with buying used? Maybe that will also help the original poster.

We tow a wranger TJ. I use a heavy duty aftermarket bumper with BlueOX "towbar tabs" $52 plus the bumper...
Found an alladin tow bar on craigslist for $250.
And an SMI stay-n-play brake system used off the forum for $700...
All self installed.
4 years and counting, 40,000 mile plus with this combo, not a problem.
Those who can't, won't, or choose not to DIY will PAY.
