- SoundGuyExplorerGlamping - camping with all the luxuries! ;)
- 2oldmanExplorer IIGoogle is your dictionary.
- pennysmom09ExplorerI believe glamping is just a made up word for "camping" in an RV with all the comforts of home. Camping with all your appliances, heat and A/c, queen bed, tv, etc.
- Mich_FExplorerIf you're out there in a tent you're camping, anything other than that could be considered "glamping".
- jplante4Explorer IIAre you trolling for trouble?
There is a group of "purists" who eschew all forms of camping except in a sleeping bag under the stars next to a campfire as "glamping". In general, a roof, a bed, a microwave and air conditioning gets you on the glamping side of the recreation called RVing.
Most of us here started camping in a tent with a Coleman lantern and maybe a hibachi to cook on. I still remember driving down US395 in the Sierras with the tent flapping in the breeze in the back of my 67 GMC pickup drying out from a snowy night in Tahoe in April. Fine when you're 20, not so much when you're 60.
My take is if it gets you off the couch and out into some sort of nature, then it can't be bad. There's just no TV replacement for seeing Orion tipping across the pre-dawn sky. Orion knows not if you've just crawled out of a tent or a Tiffin. - GordonThreeExplorerGlamping sounds like having a rental agency setup an RV at a resort, and flying in on a private jet to a nearby airfield for a weekend camping.
- johnhicksExplorerGlamping is when I glom onto the can of WD-40 to fix what doesn't move.
- WalabyExplorer IIPretty much everyone here (including me), who camp in other than a tent, fit the 'glamping' description. Im not ashamed of it... Heck, Im 56 years old, and I've worked hard to be able to 'glamp' in style. Nope, not ashamed in the slightest.
Mike - DrewEExplorer IIGlamping is a portmanteau of "glamorous" and "camping." I've mostly seen it used in regards to some ultra-luxurious tent setup, maybe involving staff or butlers or what have you to actually do all the icky or dirty bits. My experience may be tilted, though.
People who favor tents or less may think of camping in an RV, with a shower and bathroom and kitchen and dining table all at hand, to be glamping. I don't really care what they choose to think; I just enjoy feeling squeaky clean and sipping a cup of tea at the table while in my bathrobe.
("portmanteau" is an interesting word in its own right, and properly refers to a large suitcase or trunk with two halves that can be separated. It comes from the French words for "carry" and "cloak". The application to word coinage was invented by Lewis Carol.) - Chuck_thehammerExplorerVery Interesting....
I have never heard or seen that word....
been camping off and on for 50 years.
I camped from a 2 man pup tent to a 30 foot travel trailer...
