I just got back from a trip to the Great North West. I visited my dad after 16 years of not traveling up his way. He's been down a few times and we've been in touch on the phone and on the internet. It was a great visit, we had a wonderful time!My question though at the opening, we visited a Rite Aid to pick up some ice cream and wouldn't you know it. They don't have Thrifty Ice cream! What!!! That is some of the best, award winning ice cream in the world and they don't have it! How disappointing is that? Well, I did find another good one that I haven't seen at home in San Diego, Tillamook. I've heard of the cheese, I didn't know they made ice cream too? I learned something new!

IMO, you can't beat locally made ice cream... I seek that out when possible.

Gifford Ice Cream is a great ice cream. Its made up in Maine. We sell it in the Ice Cream Parlor here at the campground.

To the OP, you need to take a trip up the Oregon coast to Tillamook! They are a growing local Co-Op that has had their plant open to the public for tours as long as I can remember! Lots of RV parking and easy access just real busy in the Summer time.

Tillamook is a close 2nd to Blue Bell, however Blue Bell is still the King of ice creams.

In California, Rite Aid bought out the Thrifty Drug chain. They (Thrifty) were known for their hand dipped cones, and California Rite Aids (some of them) still have the ice cream counter.

If you get to Littleton MA, stop at Kimballs on Rt110. They have the absolute best hand dipped ice cream in the area.

The best ice cream is the kind you make yourself!

Has anyone taken an ice cream maker with them in their RV and made ice cream at their hookup campsite?

Better still, has anyone done the above when camping at a boondock campsite?

Now we are talking some important stuff....;). Used to get Tillamook Lemon Chiffon at the Tillamook Creamery but they haven't had it in years. Umpqua is very good, when we were kids if we behaved Dad would stop at Rice Hill, the wait was worth it. My two favorite Non-local ice cream is Ben and Jerry's Chuncky Monkey and Chery Garcia.

When I read the title of thread and then the mention of not going to visit your dad for 16 years I wondered what this was going to be about?

And its about ice cream.. :h

It is a 16 hr trip one way to where my Dad lived and I made sure I got there at least once a year.
Don't have to any more since he passed a year ago January.

Make sure you "make" the time to do a yearly trip from now on,
you won't regret it. :W
Even without your favorite ice cream.. :)

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. That's the idea though. He's been down a few times and we've been in touch all the time on the phone. We email occasionally but he doesn't like to email because he doesn't type real well. He's a "hunter pecker" and it takes him too long to reply so he'd just rather talk on the phone.

He's in his mid 70's and in good health but very much in touch with his mortality, he mentions it more than I think he needs too but I think he is just being real. Anyway, that is a topic for another thread. Our visit was great, I got my love for ice cream honestly. It must be genetic.

I suspect most ice cream is fairly local to the plant or plants where its made. Probably the cost to ship it frozen would price you out of the market.
Graeter's in Cincinnati has stores in Columbus, Indianapolis, Louisville and Lexington. All within 100 miles. It would be worth the drive for me if there wasn't a Graeter's about 6 blocks from home. :)
