First blowout/tire failure happened as I was merrily going down the road. Someone pulled along side of me and pointed at the tire and by the time I pulled over the rim was ruined.
Since I have had a TPMS I have had several more failures but it always let me know before I have ruined any rims. Although the TPMS alerted me after the facts as mgirado says, it warned me of the failure and allowed me to pull over sooner that I would have. Although I keep a frequent eye on the tires with my mirrors I can't look at them all the time.
