You have lots of good advise here, but I will add some anyway...
Read all the guide books you can find. There are some specifically for areas and scenic roads - get them.
Take at least two cameras - one big one with great glass and one pocket size and extra batteries and memory. Camera memory is cheap. Buy it on sale and don't erase it until you get home.
If you travel with a laptop, use it to write a log of your travels. Trust Me on these two...
Things will bleed together after not very long (Was that is Sturgeon Bay or Duluth?)
Back up the log on a thumb drive because the laptop can take a fatal hit at any time. (I've had two go down while traveling.)
Do Not Rush. When you travel like this, your only scheduler should be the seasons.
