Eastern Oregon and all of Nevada. If you travel along the state highways or county roads (no freeways for us) it appears that the Great Basin is nothing but sage and rabbit brush. Look more closely and you will find canyons, wildlife preserves, ghost towns, etc.
One of my favorite stops on our last trip along Highway 6 in Nevada (very little traffic) we stopped at Lunar Crater, a national natural landmark. It was a washboard road up to the crater and then a rough road down to the almost dry Lunar Lake which was strewn with volcanic rock. There was a wooden feed tough and some old fencing. The sunset and sunrise were surreal. We were the only ones for miles. Nirvana.
