what will happen???

We left our near new 5th wheel in El Paso, Tx in storage. I'm thinking that maybe I should have brought the trailer back with me to Pa., in lieu of the hot sun and what it might do to our graphics and who knows what else. We won't be back to pick it up until October. What can we expect to find after one summer in 100 plus degree weather? I know thousands of RV'rs leave their rigs in Arizona and Texas for years and I'm sure they receive plenty of sun damage. Would covered storage help or is the heat equally damaging?

  • Prolly the graphics won't be hurt. Wax them to get them back to new. However. You will need to check the fittings on top. Skylights can be pulled up by the sun, and Fridge vents can be dried, out and made brittle, as well as crank up vents.
  • I would leave a roof vent open provided you have a vent cover. Mine had been open since 2006! And maybe crack a window. Other than that 1 summer isn’t bad.
  • I think for one summer you'll be fine. We've had ours stored outside in full sun, no shade, for 2 years and so far nothing has been damaged. It's consistently 90+ degrees here with very intense sun as we are at about 5300 elevation. It's not the best option for long term, but short term should be fine.

ETA: We do remove our batteries and store them in the insulated garage when we aren't going to use the trailer for a long period of time.
  • I would personally never do that. In addition to fading the graphics, this is harmful to wood, rubber and batteries. Covered would be much preferable.
