OP, you handled this with grace and responsibility. If you had Zimmerman'd him you would have the responsibility of his blood on your hands. Remember LETHAL force is a last resort. Lethal force once unleashed CAN'T be recalled.
This kid tried to do something severe.. good thing you were the adult in this situation and maybe this kid or kids will think twice about doing it again in the future.
Kudo's to you for excellent handling of this situation. Now if he tried to break in an harm you and your family, then the stakes have changed.
