Whatever happened to firedude?

We were camping at Morro Bay (dunes) for two weeks this summer and I thought I saw his rig with the license plate Pyrodude (or something to that effect). I walked our dog by his space several times a day but I never saw him outside and I didn't want to intrude. I bought his book years ago and enjoyed it. I also followed his blog. I would have liked to met him in person.
